Topic: The Commons

Topic type:

A community space that was established post-earthquake to give Cantabrians a site to run transitional activities and home for a number of post-quake organisations.

The Commons is located on what used to be the site of the Crowne Plaza Hotel (cnr Kilmore and Durham Streets, central Christchurch) which was demolished in 2012.

The site has been licensed for transitional projects through an agreement between the Christchurch City Council (site owners) and Life in Vacant Spaces (LiVS), one of the core site organisations. The main project partner on site is Gap Filler. The Commons project was an experiment in a new partnership-style agreement between Christchurch City Council and Gap Filler.

Organisations and activities that have been at the site have included: Gap Filler HQ, The Pallet Pavilion, The Arcades Project, RAD Bikes, The Common Room, Commons Food Collective, Retro Sports Facility and Downtown Farmers Market.
