Thomas Patrick Ryan (Service no. 55093) was a First World war soldier with links to Burwood

Thomas Patrick Ryan was born in New Zealand on 7th November 1882. He was the fourth son of Thomas (dec.) and Mary Ryan of Ireland. His three brothers were John, William, Nicholas and Francis.

Thomas had attended Burwood and St Mary's Schools.

Prior to enlisting he had been working as a contractor in the North Canterbury district.

Thomas Ryan was described as being 5 feet, 10 1/2 inches tall and weighed 142 lb. He had a ruddy complexion, grey eyes an dark brown hair.

He sailed for England on 26th July 1917 on HMNZT 90 Ulimora. He arrived in Plymouth on 24th September 1917. On 26th October, 1917, he arrived in France and joined B Company.

On 23rd August, 1918, Thomas Patrick Ryan was killed in action in Baupaume France.

He was buried in Grevillers (New Zealand) Memorial.

Thomas is remembered on the Burwood War Memorial.
