Ernest John Rhind (Service no. 6/3140) was a First World War soldier with links to New Brighton.

Ernest Rhind was born on 15th January 1892 in Lyttelton, Christchurch.  His parents were Margaret and Alexander Rhind. His father was a storeman around this time and later a grain grader.  Ernest attended Heathcote School, and Lyttelton Borough School. The family moved to Woolston and Ernest’s father died in 1906 when Ernest was 14.

Ernest worked for his uncle H.A. Rhind, a shipping agent, in Lyttelton as a shipping clerk. He was a slender young man of moderate height with brown eyes and brown hair. He belonged to the Pioneer Amateur Motor and Sports Club.

When he enlisted, Ernest was 23 years old and single. He joined the Seventh Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion. While  training at Trentham he suffered two bouts of illness that saw him hospitalised with the flu in July 1915 and then readmitted again in August. He left for Europe in late 1915.

Ernest was staff sergeant at Polderhoek around the 3rd December 1917 when his battalion saw activity and he died in action 15th December in Belgium. He is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery. He was 26 years old.

There were seven brothers in the Rhind family .His youngest brother Hector had been injured at Gallipoli then went to the Somme where he was killed in September 1916, aged 19. Two older brothers, Cecil and Harold, came back from the war. Several female family members also served as nurses.

Ernest was posthumously awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, and the  1914-15 Star,  and these were sent to his widowed mother who was living in Woolston. Ernest's  name is listed on the Heathcote War Memorial, Lyttelton War Memorial , the Pioneer Amateur Motor and Sports Club's roll of honour, and the New Brighton Surf Bathing and Lifesaving Club's Memorial Window.
