Maurice Patrick Gregory was called up for service with the Expeditionary Force Reserves and has links to Manchester Street.

Maurice was the son of William Joseph Gregory (butcher/farmer) and Mary Ann Gregory (boarding horse keeper).  He was one of seven children: - Leo 1888, Joseph 1886, Doris 1895, Kathleen 1893, Gerald 1892, and Leicester 1896. 

The family were Roman Catholics and most of the children were baptised at St Mary’s, Christchurch North. The family lived in Bedford Street, Belfast before moving to Hayward Terrace, Christchurch sometime between 1903 & 1905.  By 1911 Mary had a job as a boarding house keeper and the family resided in the Metropolitan Private Hotel at 73 Manchester Street.

Prior to the war Maurice worked as a draper’s assistant and was living at 73 Manchester  Street. After the war Maurice continued working as a draper’s assistant before moving into sales.

Maurice was called up for service in June of 1917.  He is listed as being in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Reserve, first division of the reserve for Christchurch recruiting district.  There are no records on Cenotaph, or archway that can confirm military service.

In 1917 Maurice married Elsie Mary Ferguson and they moved to Fitzgerald Avenue.  Together they had five children Kathleen, Bill, Gavin, Pat and Joyce.

Maurice died in 1969 and Elsie died 13 years later in 1982.  They are buried at Waimairi Cemetry.
