Gerald Daniel Gregory (Service no. 43917) was a First World War soldier with links to Manchester Street.

Gerald was born on the 17 August 1892 to William Joseph Gregory (butcher/farmer) and Mary Ann Gregory (boarding house keeper).  He was one of seven children:  Leo 1888, Joseph 1886, Doris 1895, Kathleen 1893, Maurice 1891, and Leicester 1896.

The family were Roman Catholics and most of the children were baptised at St Mary’s, Christchurch North. Gerald was born in Belfast and the family lived in Bedford Street before moving to Hayward Terrace sometime between 1903 & 1905, where he attended Christchurch East School.  By 1911 Mary had a job as a boarding house keeper and the family resided in the Metropolitan Private Hotel, 73 Manchester Street.

Prior to serving Gerald worked as a Clerk for Wright Stevenson & Co – grain merchants at 198 Cashel Street.

Gerald originally tried to enlist on the 1st September 1916 but failed the medical due to a bad knee. On the 5th of January 1917 he tried again and this time passed the medical.  His army record (43917) describes him as 5ft 6 ½ inches tall with black hair, brown eyes and a fresh complexion.

Gerald served for 2 years and 137 days. Of that service, 1 year and 316 days were served overseas. Gerald was part of the 13th company 2nd Battalion Canterbury Infantry Regiment. Gerald had an interesting career starting as a private, being promoted to a corporal, then Sergeant.  However at his own request Gerald choose to revert back down the ranks, back to a private. While serving Gerald contracted nephritis – “an inflammation of the kidneys”.

Upon being discharged from the army Gerald returned to live at 73 Manchester Street and worked as a Traveller for a time before going back to work as a Clerk.  By 1925 Gerald was living at 106 Lichfield Street.

In 1932 Gerald, aged 40, married Mary (Minnie) Josephine Goulding, aged 44.  They do not appear to have had any children. They both lived in Lichfield Street during their marriage before finally moving to Mount Pleasant.  Minnie died in 1958 aged 70 and Gerald died on the 4th March 1964 aged 71.  They are buried in the same plot in Bromley cemetery.
