The Lyttelton Road Tunnel was opened on 27 February 1964.

 The road tunnel, circa 1965.. The Lyttelton Road Tunnel that created a direct road link between Christchurhc and the port of Lyttelton, was opened on 27 February 1964.    

Prior to opening the public were invited to walk through the tunnel and thousands did so. On 31 August 2014, to celebrate the tunnel's 50th anniversay, 25,000 people did it again.

Ken Bush, one of the first tunnel control operators, recalls that on the first night that cars were allowed through the queue stretched from the tunnel, down Ferry Rd and into Barbadoes Street as far back as the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

The award winning and distinctive Lyttelton Road Tunnel Administration Building, designed by  Peter Beaven, was damaged in the 2010/2011  Canterbury eathquakes and demolished.  On the 5oth Anniversary of the opening of the tunnel the public were again invited to walk through.
