The central library occupied the Venetian Gothic brick buildings, subsequently known as Library Chambers, on the corner of Hereford Street and Cambridge Terrace from 1875 to 1981 and then moved to the award-winning Warren & Mahoney designed Central Library on the corner of Gloucester Street and Oxford Terrace.

Both of these buildings sustained damage in the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, and a new central library building, Turanga, is planned for a site between Gloucester Street and Cathedral Square.
