With its large network of waterways and rivers and swampy terrain, Christchurch has been prone to flooding since its inception. There have been floods in various parts of the city in almost every decade since written records began.
Significant floods occurred in 1868, 1886, 1887,1908, 1911, 1925, 1926, 1938, 1945, 1974, 1977, 1986, then following the earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, and most recently in 2013 and 2014.
