Claude Leonard Knowles (Service no. 6/2683) was a First World War soldier with links to Burwood

Pte. C.L. Knowles. Portrait, Auckland Weekly News 1917. via AWMMClaude Leonard was born on the 14 October 1895 at Prebbleton, Canterbury, the son of the Reverend Walter Frank and Lizzie Knowles.

At the time of his enlistement he had been working as a farmer in the employ of Mr C. Kay at Little Akaloa.

Claude enlisted on 19 April 1915 and departed for overseas service on the 14 August 1915 on board the Willochra as a Private in the Canterbury Infantry Battalion, 6th Reinforcements.

Claude died from wounds on 12 October 1917.

He is remembered on Tyne Cot Memorial, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium and the Burwood War Memorial.
