Portrait of Albert Victor Parslow. Onward – Portraits of the New Zeal and Expeditionary Force, Volume 1 Albert Victor Parslow was conscripted into the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 7th March 1917 and died aged 23 years on 6th January 1918.  He had Blue eyes, a dark complexion, dark brown hair, and measured 5’ 8” in height.

Albert was born in Trafalgar, Australia on 14 February 1895 to Eliza (nee Tillett) and Harry Parslow both of London, England. The family of four, Albert and older sister Emily, sailed on the SS Hauroto to Lyttelton, New Zealand arriving 19th October 1885. The remainder of the family Mabel, Pearl, Ruby, Harry, Gladys, Myrtle and Ivy were born in New Zealand.

Albert attended Burwood Primary School from 1900 until 1908.  His siblings all left the school at about the same time and the family apparently moved to Ohoka.  At the time of conscription the Parslow family, sans Albert, appear to be resident in Normanby, Taranaki. Albert Parslow is not mentioned on the Burwood School memorial as it was erected prior to his conscription but as Albert was working in the Burwood area of Christchurch when he was conscripted his name does appear on the Burwood War Memorial.

According to NZ Army records Albert Embarked from Wellington on the 16 July 1917 on the Athenic, destination Liverpool, U.K.  9th December he marched to Etaples and on the 31st December 1917 Albert joined his Unit 3, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 2 Battalion, then posted to C Company.  Going by these dates Albert survived life in the trenches for 7 days before being wounded by gunshot in the abdomen and dying of his wounds.

Albert was buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
