Abraham Joseph Dobby (Service No. 55450) was a First World War soldier with links to Marshland.

Pte. A.J. (Don) Dobby of Marshland. Portrait, Auckland Weekly News 1918Abraham Joseph Dobby (Don) was born on the 19th of May 1896. His parents were John William Dobby (1855-1924) and Ann Jackson (1861-1949).  He was the ninth child, and fifth son, of the fifteen children of John and Ann.

His siblings were: Thomas Henry (1883-1970), John Christopher (1884-1973), Percy William (1886-1965), Eleanor (1887-1974), Jane Ann (1889-1957), Mary Elizabeth Fortuna (1891-1968), Frederick Garland (1893-?), Gladys Pearl (1894-1972), George Ernest (1898-1964), Clarence (1899-1908), Sarah (1901-1994), Arnold Arthur (1904-1992), Horace Bertram (1904-1974) and Frank Dobby (1906-1976).

He lived on a farm at 521 Hills Road, Marshland, Christchurch with his parents. Abraham was a farmer before enlisting and worked on his parent’s farm. He attended Marshland School as a child, and was a regular attendant at the Marshland Methodist Church.

He was a private in the Infantry NZEF, Canterbury Regiment, 1st Battalion. He embarked for Plymouth, England on the 26th of July 1917 on the Ulimaroa from Wellington, New Zealand.

On the 14th of September 1917, Abraham refused to obey an order given by a superior officer to lay his kit for inspection. His punishment was the loss of seven day’s pay.

Abraham Dobby died from wounds received in the field of action in Belgium on the 9th of January 1918. He was buried at Buttes Cemetery, Polygon Wood,  four and a half miles east of Ypres.

His medals, a British War Medal and a Victory Medal, were sent to the executor of his will, his brotther Percy.
