John and Annie Winder ran a bakery business in Papanui for about 30 years.

WINDER FAMILY

James and Mary Winder arrived in New Zealand on board the 'Waipa' on the 24th January 1877 from Sussex England with two small children. Ada was 5 and James 2. Their son John was born in Christchurch about 1877.

John went into the bakery trade and before coming to Papanui about 1900 had been living in Gloucester Street. He married Annie Gynes at Holy Trinity church, Avonside, in June 1899.They are known to have lived in St. John Street (Blair Ave.) Papanui for some time.

John worked as a foreman for Schumacher's in their bakery on the comer of Blair Ave. About 1911 John went into business on his own when the Rickerby Building (still standing) was completed on the corner of Papanui, Main North and Harewood Roads. The shop contained about half a dozen little tables so that people could sit down to have their cakes and tea. The shop was a very popular stop for people getting off the tram at the terminus before walking the rest of the way home.

In these early days John delivered his bread with a horse and cart and as time went on he bought a truck and by the 1930s he had three trucks on the road. John had a contract with 'Self Help' to deliver bread to all their shops around the city. He also delivered bread to the Christchurch Hospital, Burwood Hospital and Waltham boys Home.

Because of his wonderful big ovens he was in great demand to bake the wedding cakes and Christmas cakes for the people of the district. He would pick up the unbaked cakes one day and return them straight from the oven the next day.

About 1925 they moved to a new bakery on the corner of Proctor Street and Main North Road, opposite where Northlands is today. On the Northlands site there was a large grazing paddock where the Winders kept their four horses.

After John died in 1942 his sons Victor and Les who had worked for their father shut down the bakehouse as WWII had made it difficult to get petrol and tyres for their delivery trucks. Victor and Les both went to work for Blair's Bakery and later Victor worked for Ernest Adams in their bakery.
