Mary Winifred White was a young woman with links to New Brighton who served in the First World War as a nurse.

Mary Winifred White was born on 29th March, 1881. Her parents were William, a timber and coal merchant, and Martha White. She was the fifth of nine children (4 boys and 5 girls), and they lived at 39 Sea View Rd, New Brighton. Mary attended New Brighton School.

In 1907 and 1908, with two of her sisters, she did some nursing classes, taken by Dr. Alice Moorhouse, through the St. John Ambulance, and did well in the exams at the end of the courses. She then trained as a nurse at Christchurch Hospital, passing her state examinations in December 1912.

When the war broke out, she headed across to England, leaving Christchurch on 8th April, 1915, and arriving in England on the 28th May. There, she joined St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, nursing there in the military wards, as part of the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service, as part of the Territorial Force Nursing Service. On 16th August, those wards were taken over by the military authorities, and became the 5th London General Hospital. She served there until 28th May, 1918, when she was sent to serve in France. She worked in the 54th and 56th General Hospitals in France until 11th March, 1919.

She was demobilised on 14th March, 1919, in England, and returned to New Zealand, arriving in Christchurch on 3rd August, 1919. She continued to live in New Brighton, and later, in St. Albans, with family members.

She died on 28th June, 1953, aged 71 and is buried in Linwood Cemetery.

She is remembered on the New Brighton School Roll of Honour Board, and also on St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour Board, as Winifred M. White.
