Earle Spencer (Service no. 45966) was a First World War soldier with links to Burwood.
Earle Spencer was born on 29 June,1891 in Windsor, Christchurch. He was the son of William Walter and Marie Spencer.
He received his education at Burwood and West Christchurch District High Schools. He was a keen sportsman and was a member of the Linwood Cricket Club, Linwood Swimming Club, Christchurch Football Club and the Canterbury Rowing Club.
Earle was a single man, of short stature, fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. His occupation was an Insurance Inspector at the New Zealand Insurance Company.
Private Spencer was killed in action in Ypres, Belgium on 26 November, 1917 at age 26.
He is remembered with honour at Buttes, New British Cemetery (NZ) Memorial, Polygon Wood, Zonnenbeke, West Vlaanderen, Belgium.
He received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
