Topic: Peterborough Street Soldier Project

Topic type:

These are the stories of those young men with close links to Peterborough Street who fought in the First World War.

Staff at Central Peterborough library researched the war stories of thirty-one men who enlisted giving Peterborough Street either as their home or next-of-kin address.

These war stories also tell of a society now lost: occupations, businesses, schools, homes and local landmarks that no longer exist. Personal names no longer in vogue, fashions now defunct, ideologies and attitudes that have faded away. With this project we have tried to piece together the lives, and deaths, of Peterborough Street's past residents and of Christchurch 100 years ago.

Biographies of each of the Peterborough Street soldiers were displayed in folders at Central Library Peterborough in November 2015.
