Marshland Hall Roll of Honour - second portrait.

This shows the second photographic group portrait of Marshland men who enlisted for service in the First World War.The photo was unveiled during a complimentary farewell social for several other Marshland men who were about to depart for training camp or the troopships for overseas (A Boaz, A Forsyth, Albert Harwood and Harry Marsh - all Eigth Reinforcements).The social and the unveiling of the portrait took place in the Marshland Hall on Monday 16 August 1915. From this time on the unveiling ceremonies for most of the portrait frames were reported in the local newspapers.

The portraits are:

  • Driver George Vincent Chidgey (2/1913)
  • Driver Harold Twentyman Wilson (2/1698)
  • Driver Robert Thomas Crawford (2/1607)
  • Private Anthony Thomas Forsyth (3/671)
  • Driver William Henry McFadden (2/1642)
  • Private Garland Frederick Dobby (6/2117)

Unveiled by Mrs J Morton, one of the oldest residents of the district.

All the men appearing in this frame were in the Fifth Reinforcements which departed New Zealand on 17 April 1915, except for G F Dobby (Fourth reinforcements which departed on 13 June 1915).

*In early 2016 the Marshland Hall Trust handed over the remaining Roll of Honour portrait frames to the Christchurch Memorial RSA on indefinite loan for safe keeping. Thanks to both institutions for permission to use this image
