The buildings were next to St John of God before the development of the Aidanfield subdivision and served the farming activities of the Mt Magdala Community run by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd (Magdalenes) who owned the site from 1880s to 1966.

Despite submissions from the Christchurch City Council Heritage Unit, the NZ  Historic Place Trust and a number of other heritage advocates, the buildings were demolished.  Ron Fensom, who took these photos,  was engaged to represent the Halswell Residents’  Association in advocating for their retention.
