Topic: Selwyn Street - Christchurch Street

Topic type:

Selwyn Street runs from South Hagley Park across Moorhouse Avenue & Brougham Street to Aylmer Street in Spreydon.

It was named after George Augustus Selwyn (1809- 1878),  first Bishop of New Zealand 1841-1868 and later Bishop of Lichfield 1868- 1878.  The street is first mentioned in The Lyttelton Times in 1862 in a listing of the electoral roll for the City of Christchurch.
