View of Sumner from The Zig Zag, Clifton, 12 January 2014. The popular seaside suburb of Sumner lies on the south-east coast of Christchurch.

It is linked to the city by the Mt Pleasant Causeway and to Lyttelton by the Evans Pass/Sumner Road. Adjacent areas include Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs, Heathcote & Ferrymead.  The surfing beach Taylors Mistake with its historic and quirky “cave” baches lies around the coast from  Sumner.

Named after John Bird Sumner (1780-1862). Sumner was an Archbishop of Canterbury and a President of the Canterbury Association. He preached at a farewell eucharist for the first colonists at St Pauls Cathedral, London on 1 September 1850.  Sumner was named by Captain Joseph Thomas (b. 1803?) who began the survey of it on 2 October 1849.

The area became a separate borough in 1891 and was amalgamated into the city of Christchurch in 1945.

The Maori name for the area that became Sumner was Okika-paru-paru: a place of mud-flats and cockle bells.

The area has a number of historical and geographic features such as Tuawera/Cave Rock, Rapanui/Shag Rock  (largely demolished by the earthquakes and now known coloquially  as Shag Pile), Te ana o Hineraki/Moa Bone Point Cave, both at Redcliffs.

Sumner has an active historical society,  The Sumner/Redcliffs Historical Society, whihc operates a museum including archives, diaries, photographs and land deeds.  The society has published a self-guided  walk the Sumner WWII Local Defence Trail.

A new community facility on the corner of Wakefield and Nayland streets is due to open mid-2017  and will combine the library, museum and community centre .
