It was built in 1973, to host the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in which a temporary 10,000 seat western stand was erected for the event taking capacity to 35000.

The Stadium and facility was damaged after the 2010 Canterbury Earthquake and it was demolished in 2012.

A new facility Taiora: QEII Recreation and Sport Centre was built at QEII Park and  opened for Queen's Birthday weekend 2018.
