One of the original streets of Lyttelton, it was named in 1850 by by Captain Joseph Thomas and Edward Jollie after the bishopric of London.

London Street was first mentioned in the Lyttelton Times in 1851.

Now the site of many of the main businesses in Lyttelton after many buildings were damaged and then demolished after the Canterbury Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011.
