Topic type:

The Carlton Hotel is located on the corner of Bealey Avenue and Papanui Road.

´╗┐The Carlton Hotel was one of a network of early Christchurch hotels located on prominent corner sites. The first hotel on the corner of Bealey Avenue (the North Town Belt which historically marked the boundary of the central city) and Papanui Road was built by A.W. Money in 1865 and a hotel has stood there ever since.

At the time of the hotel’s construction, Papanui Road was the main route used by Cobb and Co. coaches bringing travellers from the North and in 1880 the same route was served by one of the first urban trams.

The construction of a new hotel in 1906 by Ward’s Brewery was in response to the demand for regional and national visitor accommodation caused by the 1906-7 International Exhibition in nearby Hagley Park - this was a trend in the central city, and the connection lends the hotel historical and social significance.

The 1906 Carlton Hotel was a typical example of the work of Christchurch architect Joseph Clarkson Maddison. The hotel had elements typical of the Italianate style with restrained classical detailing, and different treatment of the fenestration on each floor. Circular headed openings with key stones and molding were used on the ground floor, with square headed windows with rusticated molding on the first floor. The building was finished with a balustraded parapet, and balustraded detail as a string course between the ground and first floors.

The Carlton went on to offer its patrons new services that were nationwide firsts, including the first on-tap beer in 1939, the first beer-garden in 1947, and the first drive-in bottle store in 1954.

Prior to 2010 the building was named ‘The Carlton’ and housed offices, a fast food restaurant and The Carlton Bar and Restaurant

The 1906 building was damaged in the 2010/2011 earthquakes, and later demolished.

After a temporary building, a new hotel was constructed.
