Joseph Gregory (Service no. 50484) was a First World War Soldier with links to Manchester Street.

Joseph was born on the 27th June 1886 to William Joseph Gregory (butcher/farmer) and Mary Ann Gregory (boarding horse keeper).  He was one of seven children: - Leo 1888, Doris 1895, Kathleen 1893, Gerald 1892, Maurice 1891, and Leicester 1896.

The family were Roman Catholics and most of the children were baptised at St Mary’s, Christchurch North.   Joseph was born in Christchurch and the family lived in Bedford Street before moving to Hayward Terrace sometime between 1903 & 1905. By 1911 Mary had a job as a boarding house keeper and the family resided in the Metropolitan Private Hotel at 73 Manchester Street.

In 1916, at age 30, Joseph was recruited from Dunedin to join the 1st Division Reserves.  Joseph was a commercial traveller employed by Macky, Logan, Cordwell & Company.  He was the only son living away from home at that stage and listed his mother Mary at 73 Manchester Street as his next of kin.

Joseph was previously rejected as unfit for military service due to rheumatism, in June 1916.  His service record indicates that he had heart palpitations on exertion, which resulted in several appearances before the Medical Board.  Joseph underwent a medical examination and it claimed that he was quite fit to continue and that he be transferred to a later reinforcement.

Joseph was described as being 5 foot 8, black hair, brown eyes and with a dark complexion.

In 1918 Joseph married Nora Majorie Mary Duncan.  They had four children; Marjorie, John, Beatrice and Kenneth.

After the war  he did not return to Dunedin, rather he moved to Wellington where he initially continued working as a commercial traveller.  He later was recorded as working as a warehouse man and a company manager.

Joseph died on the 23rd March 1966. He is buried in the Makara Cemetry, in Makara Valley, Wellington.
