George Gordon Hibell (Service no. 2/7012) was a First World War soldier with links to Sumner.

George Gordon Hibell was the youngest child of Frank James and Matilda (Mary) Hibell, born 1885.  He had two older siblings, Frank Pardoe (born 1880) and Fanny Stella Pardoe (nee Radcliffe, born 1882). His father Frank was a well-known surveyor in the early days. He registered Miss R. Cox at 582 Moorhouse Avenue as next of kin on embarkations.

George lived in Sumner for about ten years, during which he had an active interest in the Sumner Cricket Club. He also served as a member of the Sumner Lifeboat Brigade, along with his older brother Frank, and held the five-year service medal. He rendered excellent service, having assisted at rescues at which 20 lives were saved. Before enlisting he had been an auctioneer with Messrs Brown, Little and Co.

George was killed in action at Messines, Belgium, on 7 June 1917. He was 32 years of age. His last rank was Private in Canterbury infantry Regiment. His older brother Frank also served as Acting Sergeant and killed in action on 17 October 1916, Somme, Northern France. In recognition of the services of the brothers, a prominent resident of Sumner presented to the Lifeboat Brigade a very powerful lamp for use in the lifeboat at night time.

George is remembered on the Sumner War Memorial Plaque.
