Denis William O’Callaghan (10/1938) was a First World War soldier with links to Marshland

Denis William O’Callaghan (Service Number 10/1938) was born on 5 July 1883 in Kaiapoi. His parents were the Reverend Denis O’Callaghan (1838-1920) and Olive Martha Jane O’Callaghan (born Philpott, 1854-1932). His siblings are Ada Sarah (1880-1951), Adelaide Emma (1881-1920), Barbara Wilhelmina (1883-1965), Alfred Eldridge (1884-1884), Olive Lavinia (1885-1966), John Philpott (1888-1943), Elise Lorenza (1891-1972) and Bertha Clara (1897-1974).

He attended Marshland School in Christchurch. His occupation before he enlisted was a labourer.

Denis enlisted just before conscription at Trentham, so was a volunteer. He enlisted on 6 January 1915 at the age of 31 years. His rank was Private.

He died on the 8 August 1915 while on active service in the Dardanelles, Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey.

Denis was awarded the 1914-1915 Star Medal and the Victory Medal. These were sent to his mother who lived in Linwood, Christchurch.

He is remembered on the Marshland Memorial Gates in Christchurch.
