Summer Starter is an annual charity fun run, that starts in New Brighton and finishes in Redcliffs.

Starting in 2014, Christchurch’s inaugural Summer Starter 10km fun run was held on November 30, starting at New Brighton Pier and finishing in Redcliffs Park. The course runs along Marine Parade and Bridge Street in New Brighton, through the wildlife reserve along Dyers Road, turning into Linwood Avenue and around the estuary along Humphreys Drive and Main Road to Redcliffs. It also includes a shorter 4 km course starting at Ti Rakau Reserve, Ferrymead, that joins the main course and also finishes in Redcliffs Park.

Warming up at start of the 2017 ASB Summer Starter, New BrightonThe event, was organised by The Press and supported by the All Right? campaign (a campaign launched by the Canterbury District Health Board and the Mental Health Foundation to promote health and wellbeing after Canterbury’s earthquakes).

Many local businesses also supported the Summer Starter, and a percentage of the entry fees were donated to a selection of local charities. Participants were encouraged to dress in the colour of  their chosen charities to show support.

The Summer Starter is aimed at participants of all levels of fitness and ability - encourages families to enter, runners to dress up, and for people to bring their dogs.

In 29 November 2015 the event ran a slightly different course due to roadworks and conservation concerns when groups of nesting pied stilts were discovered near the running course.

On 27 November 2016 the event returned with a new major sponsor and was renamed the ASB Summer Starter.  The charity model was also altered with St John named as the primary charity, a change to the event's fundraising model from previous years.

In 2017 the ASB Summer Starter ran again on the same course on 26 November.
