Located at 117 Manchester Street, a boarding house and restaurant

The Silver Grid Restaurant and boarding house was a two storey brick building located at 117 Manchester Street, between Tuam and St  Asasph Streets.

The Silver Grid Fish and Oyster Saloon, was originally opened at 107 Manchester Street, on 19 June 1902, by the proprietors Alfred Burns and Charles Luney. Somewhere around 1910/1911 the street numbering would change and this would become 117 Manchester Street.

On the ground floor were a restaurant, kitchen and shop, and on the top floor, there were 18 rooms, mainly bedrooms. A small shop at the southern end of the ground floor (at 115 Manchester Street) was occupied by the book-seller,  A. D. Smith.  A glass verandah ran along the front of the building with a narrow footway, or bridge running along the top of this. At the rear of the building facing the side of the Opera House were two fire escapes.

In 1909 the Silver Grid had gained some notoriety in Christchurch as the scene of the murder of Alice Newman, an employee of the restaurant.

Around 1912, John Percival Smith, took over the business from Alfred Burns - Burns had a lease with 14 years' currency.

In 1917 the building was again in the news as the scene of a devastating fire. In the early morning of 19 November 1917 a fire broke out in the ground floor of the building. Of the 26 occupants of the boarding house, six people died and a number were injured. Elsie Stack, Thomas David Smith and F.W. Hatch would perish in the flames, while Annie Smith, Henry Herbert Beere and Ted Gledhill died later from injuries received in the fire.
