James John Bayne (Service no. 48896) was a First World War soldier with links to Burwood

Portrait, Auckland Weekly News 1918James John Bayne was born in England on 20 May 1887, the son of William and Emma Bayne.

The 1891 and 1901 England Census shows the family living on Princes Road, Plumstead, Kent, England.

According to his service records James married Mary Elizabeth on 8 March 1916, and they had two boys James (b. 1904) and William (b. 1916).

At the time of his enlistement he had been residing in New Zealand for 9  years and working as self-employed dairyman living at Creswell Avenue, Burwood.

James embarked for overseas service on 9 Jun 1917 aborad the Willochra as a Rifleman with the
26th Reinforcements, G Company.

He was killed in action in Somme, France on 26 March 1918.

James is buried at Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, Somme, France.

He is remembered on the Burwood War Memorial.
