Front row left is Alexander Burns: Born 15 February 1851 at Kilmarnock. He worked at Young’s farm at Ermdale near Gummies Bush, near Riverton in Southland. In the late 1860’s he joined the Armed Constabulary and was involved in the Taranaki Wars with the Maoris. Finally he returned to his family in Invercargill where he joined the Survey Department.
