Topic type:

Under construction on the corner of Gloucester Street and Cathedral Square the new central library building, Tūranga, is due to open in 2018.

Designed by New Zealand company Architectus in partnership with Danish architects, schmidt hammer lassen, the new library building is currently being built on the corner of Cathedral Square and Gloucester Street.

Once constructed at about 9,850m2 it will be the largest in the South Island and a third larger than the city’s former central library building.

The name, Tūranga, was gifted by Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga and reflects the relationship with Whitireia, the traditional name for Cathedral Square.
