Edwin Hugh Senior (Service no. 7/394) was a First World War soldier with links to Sumner

Trooper E.H. SeniorEdwin Hugh Senior, the eldest son of Arthur and Ellen Millicent Senior (nee Muirhead), was born on the 18th August 1892 in Christchurch. He had three younger siblings, Robert Roy, John Arthur, and Margaret Patricia. In the early 1900s the family lived in Redcliffs, Christchurch, where Arthur was a fisherman.

Edwin had received his education at Sumner Borough School and Ashburton High School. After passing both the junior and senior civil service examinations he joined the Lands and Survey Department. After three years with the Department he left to join the staff of Davies and Co., Surveyors, with whom he was employed as a survey cadet when he enlisted. At the time of enlistment he was living at Beach Street in Redcliffs, Christchurch.

Edwin had been a keen sailor, was a member of the Christchurch Sailing Club and owned his own yacht, Mona. He had been a member of both the Sumner Cricket and Football Clubs. He had been involved with Ashburton High School cadets and the Coastal Defence group.

He was described in his military file as being 5 ft, 5 ½ inches tall with blue eyes and brown hair, and a scar under his chin.

Enlisted, left with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles on the 16 October 1914 from Wellington bound for Alexandria, Egypt.

Edwin died on 30 August 1915, at sea aboard the HMT Devanha, from a gunshot wound to the chest that he had received days before in the Dardanelles. He was buried at sea somewhere between Anzac Cove and Moudros Harbour.

While his father was originally recorded on his military personnel file as his next of kin later documentation showed that Edward’s will was in favour of his mother.

He is remembered at the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey, on the family plot at Linwood Cemetery, Ashburton War Memorial and Sumner War Memorial plaque.
