Topic: Pompey the Penguin
In 1904 Joseph Vangioni discovered a Yellow Crested penguin washed up on Fisherman'sBay beach. The penguin was starving so he took it home to recuperate. Attempts to return him to the sea failed. Pompey,as he was named, was given a house in an old barrel in the yard.
Each day Pompey would waddle down to the sea and head out on a fishing expedition.
Akaroa by this stage had become quite a popular tourist destination, and Pompey was becoming rather a famous attraction!
Vangioni sent to England for China tea sets bearing a picture of Pompey and his name.
