Little River is a town on Banks Peninsula

The township of Little River is about 53 kms east of Christchurch on the Christchurch–Akaroa highway.

The township itself developed as a coaching stop on the way to Akaroa and as a sawmilling settlement, supplying timber toChristchurchand as a farm service centre and was the terminus of a branch railway from 1886 until 1962.   It is now a significant tourist stop and the terminus of the Christchurch to  Little River Railtrail cycleway.

There are many significant Maori wahi tapu sites in the vicinity including Wairewa Marae , Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere) and Wairewa (LakeForsyth) .
