Topic: 1919 Military Parade at Akaroa to celebrate the visit of the French Mission to New Zealand

Topic type:

military parade was organised to welcome the French Mission to New Zealand on their visit to Akaroa  9-10 January 1919.   This was the only military parade for the  mission during their three week visit and was mounted because of Akaroa's early French settlement.

Local school children were dressed in the colours of  the French flag and sang the Marsellaise in French and  local Maori also sang the Marsellaise and provided a poi demonstration.  The mission was welcomed enthusiastically and made several stops along the route from Christchurch to Akaroa.    Source: Akaroa Mail and Banks Peninsula Advertiser, 10 January 1919.
