From the Shuttleworth Collection.

1. The large ship on the right of the wharf displaying bunting and many passengers is the Rotomahana which turned passengers away before leaving Lyttelton for the Akaroa Regatta.   She had 1200 aboard which would have had health and safety scratching their heads if it were today.   The Lyttelton Marine Band also came on the Rotomahana and played during its time here.

2.  A smaller boat can be seen on the left side of the wharf and this is probably the Cygnet which brought 220 passengers.

3. The John Anderson brought competing crews, their boats and more passengers.

4.  H M S Pioneer was also in attendance.  She was a 2000 ton light cruiser visiting New Zealand at the time.

5.  The Akaroa Regatta was an annual event held for many years either side of 1900 and up into the 1930s.    It was “the place to be seen” where women and children were beautiful dressed for the occasion supported by male companions clothed in their finest.

This facts above were gleaned from the Akaroa Mail issued on 18th Dec 1907.
